Every year around the end of January and the beginning of December, a strange sight can be seen in lingerie departments and boutiques around the country. The human male in an unnatural habitat. There are lots of different types, the hoverers, who just hover around on the periphery and leave empty handed, the grabbers, who grab the first thing that looks like it might fit and hope for the best and finally the wishful thinkers, who buy the most inappropriate, uncomfortable items known to man and get upset when their efforts are in vain.
Most women have at some point in their life received lingerie from men and usually it’s stuffed in the back of the drawer never to be worn or see the light of day again.
But do not fear, I am here to give you some tips so that the lady in your life gets the lingerie she deserves…
First of all, what is her size. If you do not know, do not guess, you will just end up buying the wrong size, bra sizes are to men what the offside rule is to women. If in doubt, ask her friends, they will be extremely impressed with your devotion. If you live together have a quick look in the washing and double check her bra size and also her brief size. If you want extra brownie points, why not arrange for her to go to a fancy place for a fitting and treat her to some goodies?
This is a brand new range from Lepel London, the Paloma. It is classy but also sexy with the over bust straps and also so comfortable to wear.
So now we know what size she wears, we just need to know what style she likes. For example, if your lady is not full busted she might prefer something padded, if she is fuller busted something like an underwired full cup. Does she like plunge or balconette? I know this might as well be in French, but again, ask her friends, they will know, or if you live together and you are brave, pinch one of her favourites out of the washing and take it with you. You do need to consider styles of bottoms as well, so does she like briefs, thongs or high waisted? make sure you buy something you have seen her wear before, if she is a thong girl she won’t appreciate a pair of vintage style high waisted briefs, and more to the point you will not get to see her wear them!
One of my favourite brands is Silhouette, this is their best selling basque, the Paysanne, perfect for the vintage loving lady in your life!
Size, check! Style, check! Now onto the colour. Women always complain that men buy things they want to see them wear, not things she would buy for herself, this usually is in reference to red. Red lingerie is a bit like Marmite, you either love it or hate it. I personally have a couple of red sets and I adore them, however, it is not to everyones taste. So if you never saw her wear red, do not buy red. Black is extremely safe, kind of like George Clooney, it never goes out of style. However, there are some gorgeous designs around at the moment and you will be able to go for something more fun and colourful, provided it is to her taste.
The devil is in the detail
I always say it and it is true, the devil is indeed in the detail! Does she like suspenders, then buy her a suspender belt and some gorgeous silk stockings, never seen her wear one, then don’t bother. If she is into vintage, you might want to get her a corselet or a corset, but again if it is not her style then don’t do it. Remember this is about her not you, so make sure you bear that in mind.
As a final tip, I would suggest that you buy two pairs of briefs instead of one, briefs get washed more than bras, so they do not last as long, if you buy two pairs your lovely lady (and you) get to enjoy the lingerie longer! Also do not buy a voucher, it just smacks of last minute and won’t get you any brownie points at all.
